For your consideration, we are offering for sale this very uncommon Restored Circa 1915 Waterman #414 P.S.F. Black Hard Rubber with Sterling Silver Trefoil Vine Overlay Fountain Pen. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.
Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Cleaned, buffed, and polished the outside of the cap and barrel. Hand polished the Sterling Silver Waterman Cap, Sterling Barrel, Sterling Lever Assembly and Waterman 14K #4 NIB.
This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with Sterling Silver Overlay in what is known as the Trefoil Vine pattern. This model was in production from 1915 to circa 1917. The Sterling Silver overlay is gorgeous displaying a beautiful Art Nouveau look. The Sterling Waterman Ideal Cap is a Clipless model and displays absolutely no wear. The cap is a screw-on type and secures tightly to the barrel. All Sterling Silver overlay has been polished to shine brightly - there is some light scratching that commensurates with the age of the pen. The barrel is stamped, "WATERMAN'S IDEAL FOUNTAIN PEN and the Sterling Overlay Cap and Barrel hare stamped, Sterling". The butt end of the fountain pen has imprint model number "414 P.S.F.". There are no monograms or personalization to either the cap or barrel. There are no cracks or repairs to the hard rubber. This Waterman #414 PSF measures 5 1/2" in length capped and 6 3/4" posted.
The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. This particular Waterman has the sprung pressure bar which is scarce to find. I have tested the filling mechanism with water and fills wonderfully. The Globe and Ideal imprint on the lever display little wear.
This Waterman has a fantastic #4 WATERMAN IDEAL NEW YORK Nib that writes very smoothly. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring .60mm when measured with digital calipers - a medium nib point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a medium to double broad line measuring roughly .63mm with light pressure to 1.60mm with medium pressure when measured with digital calipers. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.
Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.
These P.S.F. Waterman Fountain Pens overlays are extremely difficult to find since they were produced from 1915 to 1917. Adding in the "sprung pressure bar" makes the pen more scarce making it at least as scarce as Waterman Coin Fillers. I would consider the condition of this fountain pen to easily grade in Very Fine to Excellent condition. This fountain pen is one that very few people will be able to say they have in their fine writing instrument stable.
