For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Very Scarce Uncommon Restored Circa 1910 Waterman #416 Black Hard Rubber with Sterling Silver Trefoil Overlay Eyedropper Fountain Pen. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition. Such an exceptional fountain pen - Large Sterling Overlay Waterman Fountain Pens are very uncommon to acquire, especially in a 416 model.
Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Cleaned, buffed, and polished the outside of the cap and barrel. Hand polished the Sterling Silver Waterman Clip-Cap Clip, Sterling Cap, Sterling Barrel and Waterman 14K #6 NIB.
This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with Sterling Silver Overlay in what is known as the Art Nouveau or Trefoil pattern. This pattern was in production from 1907 to circa 1923. The Sterling Silver overlay is gorgeous displaying a beautiful Art Nouveau look. The Sterling Waterman Ideal Clip-Cap displays display absolutely no wear. All Sterling Silver overlay has been polished to shine brightly. The barrel is stamped, "WATERMAN'S IDEAL FOUNTAIN STERLING". The butt end of the fountain pen has imprint model number "16" with no hundreds column digit. The cap is a slip type cap with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There is a monogram on the barrel that reads, "FBN". There are no cracks or repairs to the hard rubber or Sterling Silver overlay. There are some very light tooling marks on the section - they are very minor but point it out for clarity sake. This Waterman #416 measures 5 5/8" in length capped and 7" posted.
This Waterman Fountain Pen is an Eyedropper Fill type. The section unscrews and one fills the barrel with ink and attached the section back to the barrel for use. It is a simply designed filling system and works as it should with ink.
This Waterman has a wonderful #6 WATERMAN IDEAL NEW YORK Flex Nib. The iridium tipping is in excellent condition with the point measuring .66mm when measured with digital calipers - a medium nib point. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine to triple broad line. The fine line measuring roughly .49mm with light pressure and flexes to a triple broad stroke of 2.21mm with medium to firm pressure when measured with digital calipers. This Ideal Nib writes smoothly with a soft flexible nib - it is a pleasure to write with. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.
Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.
These large Waterman Fountain Pens overlays are extremely difficult to find especially in Sterling. To give some context, this 416 is longer and has a larger diameter than a Parker Senior Maxima. This #416 Sterling Art Nouveau/Trefoil Pattern Overlay Fountain Pen is a difficult example to find and considered very uncommon. I would consider the condition of this fountain pen to grade in Very Fine condition. This is one very few people will be able to say they have in the fine writing instrument stable.
