For your consideration we are offering for sale this Restored 1932 Waterman 9 Carat Solid Gold Overlay Fountain Pen made for the British market. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.
I have ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new, properly sized silicone sac. Hand polished 9 carat gold cap, 9 carat gold barrel and Ideal lever box assembly along with the flexible Ideal 14K #2 NIB.
This fountain pen is made from hard rubber with a solid 9ct gold overlay. The 9ct gold overlay has a "parallel line" pattern / design. The fountain barrel has a very faint, almost non-existent imprint to the hard rubber on buttend side of the barrel that partially reads, "WATERMAN'S REG US PAT. OFF. FOUNTAIN PEN". The butt end of the fountain pen does not display the model number imprint, but is a Waterman 52 size pen. The 9ct gold overlay on the barrel is hallmarked with, "F.D.W. (for Frank D. Waterman, the head of the company at the time), 9 (for 9 carat solid gold) "375" (i.e. 9 karat gold), lowercase ' r ' which is the date mark for year 1932 and last hallmark is a lion head which would be the city mark for London". The cap is also marked 9 375 on the side and at the very top of the cap as seen in image 8.
The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. The cap does not and never was intended to have an attached clip, they are no clip cap holes for a clip to be attached through. There is a monogram in the cartouche area of the barrel with the initials, "HIS". There are no cracks, nicks or repairs to the hard rubber and the 9 carat overlay is in amazing condition for it's age, just some very minor light surface scratches. This Waterman measures 5 1/2" in length capped and 6 3/4" posted.
The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. The Globe and Ideal imprint on the lever is crisp and clean, no brassing. I have tested the filling mechanism with water and fills as it was intended to.
The NIB on this Waterman is 14K and a #2 size. The NIB writes very smoothly and have some amazing flexibility and responsiveness. When measuring the actual tip of the 14K #2 Ideal NIB, it measured at .89mm with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine line measuring roughly .56mm with very light pressure on the horizontal strokes and flexes up to a triple broad stroke 2.82mm (see image) with firm to medium pressure, I didn't want to overextend the NIB's capabilities. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that is listed for sale. . The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue-Black Ink. Again, I cannot emphasize this enough, the NIB is very smooth and has some of the best flexibility I on a waterman NIB is a long time.
Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.
This is antique Waterman's Fountain Pen is in ready to write condition using the incredible flexible NIB. I would consider the condition of this fountain to easily grade excellent and certainly would be a fabulous writing instrument to add to your writing arsenal collection.
