For your consideration we are offering for sale this Gorgeous Restored 1920s Waterman #5 Red Ripple Hard Rubber Fountain Pen with Grey Cap Band & NIB. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.
Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Cleaned and polished the outside of the cap and barrel. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new, properly sized, #15 silicone sac. Hand polished the 18K Gold Filled Cap Banding, Gold Filled Waterman Ideal Clip, 18K Gold Filled Ideal Lever Box Assembly along with the Waterman 14K Grey nib.
This fountain pen is made from hard rubber in the red ripple design. The coloring is an amazing red and black color. The barrel has a very crisp imprint at the center of the barrel that reads, "WATERMAN'S REG. U.S. IDEAL GLOBE LOGO PAT. OFFICE FOUNTAIN PEN RIPPLE". The lower portion of the barrel has an equally crisp imprint that reads, "WATERMAN'S REG. U.S. IDEAL GLOBE LOGO PAT. OFFICE FOUNTAIN PEN" and the butt end of the fountain pen has the 5 imprint.
The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly. The cap has the Grey cap banding sandwiched between the thin white celluloid bands. There are no monograms or personalizations to either the cap or barrel. There are no cracks, nicks or repairs to the hard rubber. This Waterman 5 measures 5 1/8" in length capped and 6 3/8" posted.
The lever and box assembly have been cleaned and oiled. It works flawlessly and smoothly. The Globe and Ideal imprint on the lever are crisp and clean and display no brassing. The Waterman Ideal Clip has just a very tiny amount of brassing on the ball of the clip which, is very common. The gold filled cap banding has only a small edge spot that is starting to brassing. The brassing is very minor, almost insignificant, but point it out for clarity sake.
Here is the "fun" part of this fountain pen. The nib is a Waterman Grey nib - a left-foot oblique style nib. The nib is in wonderful condition that writes with an extra fine line to triple broad stoke plus. When measuring the actual tip of the 14K Grey nib, it measures at 1.02mm with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with an extra fine line measuring roughly .39mm on the three horizontal strokes and flexes up to 2.08mm with medium to firm pressure. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. I have tested the filling mechanism with water and fills wonderfully. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Black Ink.
Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.
This is antique Waterman #5 Fountain Pen is in ready to write condition using the scarce Grey flexible nib. I would consider the condition of this fountain in excellent condition and certainly a Holy Grail collector grade writing instrument. One of the best fountain pens that I have in my collection.
