For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Restored 1920s Waterman 452 Hard Rubber Fountain Pen with Sterling Silver Overlay. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.
Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new sac. Hand polished the Sterling Waterman Ideal Cap & Clip, Barrel and Ideal Lever Box Assembly along with the Ideal 14K #2 NIB.
This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with Sterling Silver Overlay. The sterling silver overlay is known as a basket weave pattern. The hard rubber portion of the pen displays a black color with little oxidation. The butt end of the fountain pen has the 452 imprint.
The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly. There are no monograms or personalizations on the barrel and there is a cartouche area that has been left untouched. There are no cracks, nicks or repairs to the hard rubber. The sterling overlay looks beautiful that display less than normal use wear and scratching. This Waterman 452 measures 5 3/8" in length capped and 6 5/8" posted.
The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. I have tested the filling mechanism with water and fills wonderfully. The Globe and Ideal imprint on the lever are clean.
The NIB is a 14K #2 Ideal Waterman NIB. This Nib is a smooth writer. When measuring the actual tip of the 14K Ideal NIB, it measured at a medium point of .63mm when measured with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with an extra-fine line measuring roughly .43mm and flexes up to a double broad stroke of approximately 1.23mm with a medium to firm pressure. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue-Black Ink.
Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.
This is an exceptional, antique Waterman's 452 Fountain Pen with Sterling Basket Weave Overlay. I would grade this Waterman 452 in Excellent Condition and is a collector grade Waterman. A superb writing instrument to add to your writing arsenal collection!
